Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration

Working Smoke Detectors Save Lives. SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul Reminds All to Check their Smoke Detectors

Smoke can do significant property damage even without fire, and both smoke and fire – individual or together – are hazardous. SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul joins CALFire (the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection) in urging residents to install smoke detectors, and to check regularly that they are working.

Smoke detectors give people enough warning to leave the premises before conditions make it impossible to leave. These conditions include:

  • Flames that block exits
  • Smoke that is toxic and/or blocks people’s ability to absorb oxygen, thereby knocking them unconscious
  • Heat high enough to cause unconsciousness

Smoke or Fire Damage from Outside the Home

We’re all aware that smoke from wildfires can travel significant distances to lower air quality, leave odors inside structures, and even cause damage.

Embers can travel a mile, perhaps further, to start new fires.

No matter what the source of the fire, SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul is Here to Help. ®

Appreciation for Firefighters and Smokejumpers

Even outside of fire season, they keep busy preparing for fire season and fighting other kinds of fire. We appreciate the work they do.

We read that smokejumpers (firefighters who parachute into hard-to-access areas) carry at least 80 pounds of equipment, which doesn’t count the heavy gear (such as helmets) they are wearing or the equipment in their pockets.

Gear includes:

  • Personal fire shelter to protect smokejumper for brief time in fast-moving blazes
  • 2 days’ worth of food, often includes
    • Canned foods
    • Dried noodles (ramen)
    • Spam
    • Plenty of water bottles
  • Sleeping bags
  • Water pumps and hauling bags to transport water or other firefighting chemicals to the site
    • Hand tools
    • Saws
    • Rakes
    • Shovel
    • Pickaxe, other axe(s)
    • Crosscut saws
    • Chainsaws
  • Glowsticks, flashlights, flares, “call 911” flags
  • Emergency radios
  • Survival blanket
  • Hand warmers

SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul
