Multiple Kinds of Damage Handled by a Single Team | SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul

2/1/2024 (Permalink)

heavy rain pounding down on a blacktop surface SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul is Here to Help® when any disaster strikes!

Have you ever thought about the truth in the cliché “when it rains, it pours”? It seems like when one bad thing occurs it almost always leads to another. That saying is particularly true when it comes to the kinds of damage a disaster can leave behind.

When a storm blows through or an appliance in your home gives out, one kind of damage will almost always lead to another. That is why knowing you have a total restoration team like ours at SERVPRO® can give you a lot of peace of mind.

The Impact of Disasters

When a disaster strikes, it can take a pretty big toll on either your home or your community—or both. Even if a storm is predicted far enough out that you have time to prepare the weather is never completely predictable. Things can change fast and damage can always be far worse than you may have imagined. Manmade disaster that happen inside your home can be just as bad, especially as they often occur when you had no idea they were coming.

Rain can roll in and get heavy, leading to flooding, which will lead to mold growth as everything becomes damp. High winds could put a tree on your roof or blow debris around and knock power out. Fires leave behind all kinds of damage, including smoke, soot, structural damage, standing water and odors.

The longer damage sticks around, the worse things will get.

The physical toll isn’t the only one to consider, either. Disasters of any kind take a major toll on anyone that lives through them mentally as well. That is why fast restoration will always matter.

Finding Hidden Moisture in Your Home | SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul

1/2/2024 (Permalink)

close up of condensation on window pane and ledge Water damage can happen anywhere in your home. Call SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul to restore water damage on your property 24/7, 365.

We use a lot of water every day. From washing clothes to running the dishwashers or cleaning dirty paws, having water we can control with the flip of a switch makes our lives a lot easier. It makes our lives easier, until it ends up in the wrong places, at least.

Mother Nature might bring intense rains that cause flooding, or an appliance failure could leave our kitchens looking more like a swimming pool. Even a small hole in a water line can cause a lot of chaos.

The good news is that when you know the most common places that moisture could be hanging out in your home, you can avoid extreme damage.

Under Your Sinks

Your kitchen and your bathrooms are some of the top locations where water can lead to damage in your home. While that might seem obvious, they can actually be pretty challenging to find. With numerous water lines, cleaning products blocking your view and the potential for drips coming from spills, moisture can hide out for quite some time.

When leaks start under a sink, they often move into cabinets, walls and the floor. Check your sinks weekly. Run your hands around all the water lines, checking for any damp places. Make sure all of the connections are tight, and replace any seals that are starting to wear out.

Beneath Appliances

Large appliances are great for making some of our least favorite tasks easier, but they are also prone to hidden leaks. When a washing machine, dishwasher or refrigerator starts to leak, it often happens underneath or behind the appliance. You can end up with some pretty serious structural damage before you even realize a leak has started.

Put it on your to-do list to pull your large appliances out every three or four months. Give the area behind them and underneath them a deep-cleaning, and look for signs of potential water issues. Soft spots in the floor, puddles or mold growth are all reasons to do some deeper investigating.

Behind Your Walls or Floors

When a leak starts, it can move pretty quickly to other parts of your home. Water can seep into even the smallest of cracks, which means it can easily find its way behind your walls or under your floor.

Check for musty odors, especially around your water-based appliances. A new squeak in the floor is another reason you might want to do some deeper digging to look for damage.

Around Your Windows and Doors

When the temperature inside or outside of your home swings from high to low, condensation can form on your windows. It might be tempting to ignore this—it will go away on its own right? Condensation can actually stick around, seeping into any gaps around your windows or doors.

Feel around your window frames and door frames for excess moisture on a regular basis. Check the seals and make sure they aren’t showing any signs of aging. At the change of the seasons, get the caulk gun out and give everything a fresh coat to ensure your home is tightly sealed.

Water damage doesn’t have to derail your life for long. If you find damage in your home, call SERVPRO® to get things back on track fast. With one call, we will start your restoration and make sure your home is exactly as it should be in no time.

Don’t ignore signs of water damage! Call SERVPRO for a quick restoration.

Your First Steps When You Find Water in Your Business | SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul

12/1/2023 (Permalink)

concrete floor tiling with large cracks and water on it Has water damage infiltrated your business? Give SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul a call to get that resolved!

It’s time to get the day started. You head into the office, open the doors and reach for the lights. But what is that musty odor completely overwhelming your senses? Has your building sprung a leak somewhere?

This scenario is not one any business owner or manager wants to handle, but when you step through the door and find yourself standing in a puddle of water, now you have any actual nightmare on your hands!

Whether it comes from a natural source or a failure somewhere in your plumbing system, water in your business requires fast action. You need to know how to respond when disaster strikes so that you can get back to business.

One Step at a Time

Even when a predicted natural disaster strikes and you have ample time to prepare, finding your business flooded is a lot to handle. Give yourself a moment to take a breath and think through a few simple steps you can take to avoid deep damage and potential mold growth.

1.Keep things safe. Any time a disaster strikes, safety should be your No. 1 priority. Move to somewhere that is dry in order to better assess exactly what you are dealing with. Call SERVPRO® as soon as you can so we can start taking your information over the phone and preparing a crew to head to your property. While you wait for the professionals to arrive, snap some photos of the flooding and any subsequent damage.

2. Gain control. Moving quickly is the best way to avoid major losses in your building. If you can, find the source of the water and shut it off. This is also the best way to identify exactly what kind of water you are dealing with. If you can’t find the exact source of the water, shut the water off to the entire building.

3. Start drying things out. Floodwaters can become contaminated quickly, so the more you can keep yourself dry, the safer you will stay. Open windows or turn on fans if you can safely do so in order to start the drying process, and remove anything in the water’s path.

Work With the Pros

When our professionals reach your property, they will immediately go to work removing standing water. They will assess everything that will need to be done, and make sure you understand exactly what recovery is going to look like as they proceed. We also work directly with your insurance agency in order to ensure the smoothest process possible.

While your restoration proceeds with our professionals, you can turn your attention back to getting business up and running again. If it is safe to do so, our team can close off the flooded part of your building so that you can open back up.

Throughout the drying process, we will make sure you are a part of any decisions that need to be made about your property. It is our goal to restore as much as possible so that you have less to replace in the end.

Finding water in your business doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Call SERVPRO, take a few quick action steps and you won’t miss a moment of work.

What to Do after Water Damage | SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Pool of water sitting on top of a herringbone patterned wood floor with furniture nearby If you discover water damage in your home or business, call SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul right away.

The power of water is pretty impressive. Even in a controlled sense as it pumps through pipes in our home and turns on and off at the touch of a hand, water can still flow at surprising strengths. If you have even seen the ocean first-hand, you know the raw power it holds.

Water may be something we can’t live without, but when it gets into the wrong places we can end up with a total mess. We may have fairly mild weather throughout the year in Spring Valley, but that doesn’t make us exempt from flooding concerns. Heavy rains are common in the spring and have left some residents consistently dealing with washed-out roads. Melt from the snowpack has also been a major concern over the years. Whether from a natural cause or a busted pipe, water can create utter chaos.

While there are plenty of ways to protect and prepare your home from flooding, sometimes a disaster simply can’t be stopped. That’s why having water damage restoration professionals around the corner is incredibly important.

The First Steps

If you do experience water damage in your home, the best way to mitigate the damages is to move quickly. Water moves fast, and it can hide out in the smallest places. Finding the source of the water and doing what you can to dry the area will be the best way to start regaining control.

After you have found the source, do what you can to stop the flow. If the flood is from a natural source, that might mean waiting until the danger is over in a safe space. Internal sources can be turned off by locating the water shut off valves. Make sure you know where all of your shut-off valves are located throughout the house, and get familiar with your breaker box as well.

Never step into water that is touching electrical systems. Turn the power off at the source before you start trying to dry things out.

Once you can safely do so, call SERVPRO®. The time of day will never be a problem with our 247 availability, and the faster you call us, the faster we can start saving your property.

How We Dry Your Home

As soon as you call us, we will start taking information over the phone in order to get the best idea of how to tackle your situation. This is a great time to start snapping some photos of the flooding and any damage it has done. We work with your insurance company in order to create the smoothest process possible, and photos are a great way to keep up with the timeline of everything.

While we take your information over the phone, we will also start preparing a team to dispatch to your home with all the equipment needed to get things dry. Removing standing water and drying out soft materials will be our first priority. It is our goal to restore as much of your personal property as possible, so you have less to replace later. When we dry out your home and your items, we ensure not a drop of water is left, everything is completely sanitized and there are no lingering odors.

Our crew of professionals can handle every aspect of your restoration, no matter how extensive your damage is. If there is a part of your home that has been damaged beyond repair, we can tear it down and rebuild it. Your home will be completely yours again when the restoration is complete.

Any time your home experiences a leak that leaves more than an inch of water, you need to call professionals. Pipe failures, septic issues and stormwaters all require a different kind of response, and our crew is trained in all of them. With SERVPRO in your own neighborhood, you can appreciate water for the life-giving source it is without worry of a disaster.

How to Handle Heavy Rain | SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

image of a large body of water during a rain storm with ripples caused by the heavy downpour Water damage in your home? Not for long with SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul on the case!

Rain gently falling down can be a much-welcomed break from hot and dry temperatures in the spring and the summer. It seems to calm the world around us down, leaving everything sweet-smelling and refreshed.

When rain gets heavy, though, it can challenge our gutters and leave our roofs leaking. Heavy rain also comes with other threats like high wind that can cause damages of their own. And when rain starts to overwhelm the ground, our basements are threatened.

SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul is right around the corner, ready to take care of any damage you might incur during a heavy rain storm. We also want to make sure you know how to stay safe and protect your home against potential disasters. The good news is that only takes a few steps to do both.

Hazards of Intense Rain

There are many perks to living in Spring Valley and the surrounding areas, with a big one certainly being the mostly mild weather we are fortunate to experience most of the year. Even though our temps don’t always reach extreme highs or lows, we do still experience severe thunderstorms, derechos and floods. In May, we even saw a round of severe weather that brought tornado warnings to much of our area.

Living so close to San Diego Bay and the Pacific also means we can see coastal storms and flooding. Heavy rains can leave our streets covered in water and the Bay overflowing, making all of our homes vulnerable to water damage.

We might not be able to prevent flooding, but we can prepare for it. Creating a plan with your family and keeping a close eye on local forecasts is a great first step in being able to take quick action when dangerous rain or other flooding conditions are predicted.

Staying Safe

Staying safe should always be your top priority when it comes to preparing your home and your family for flooding. If you are on the road, head home or find a safe interior location away from ditches or roads that may become waterlogged.

If you are at home, bring inside anything that could be swept away in a flash flood. Park your car somewhere safe as well, and take anything off the lower levels of your home that you can’t replace. If severe flooding is predicted and likely, turn the electricity off to the lowest levels of your home.

During the storm, if your home starts taking on water, move to the highest location possible and wait it out. Don’t attempt to walk through floodwaters while they are still flowing, there is a good possibility they are moving a lot faster than you think. Stay as dry as possible and give us a call as soon as you can to start taking the next steps towards your recovery.

Future Prevention Strategies

With weather that can be less than predictable, even the most prepared home might see a disaster at some point. While we work to restore your home after a flood, we will make sure that everything is put back together exactly as it should be and help you make some decisions that could prevent future damages.

Starting outside of your home is the best way to protect it against heavy rains and other natural causes of flooding. Seek the advice of a professional, and consider adding more grading and organic materials to your yard. This is a great way to ensure rain rolls away from your home or is absorbed before it can cause puddles.

If you don’t already have one, or yours just couldn’t keep up during the last event, a sump pump upgrade in your basement or crawl space can go a long way in keeping water out of your home. Sump pumps force water away from your foundation, keeping your basement drier and protecting your home from the bottom up.

Our SERVPRO® crew is always ready to respond to your home when water leaves it wet. With our expertise and industry-leading equipment, we can tackle everything from the smallest spill to the biggest flood. We will get you back to living life in no time.

We are here for all of your water disasters. Contact us day or night for a quick recovery.

The Places Water Lurks | SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul

5/9/2023 (Permalink)

img src =”bucket” alt = " blue bucket in the middle of the living area catching water falling from the ceiling ” > Think you may have water damage in your home? Here are some tips from SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul to find the source.

Water can do a lot of damage in a little bit of time when it gets into the wrong places. Not only is the damage immediate, but the longer it sits the worse it gets. Water also likes to lurk in places unseen, making it even more disastrous.

One of the ways you can combat the effects of water damage in your home is getting to know the places that water likes to hide. When you know some of the top places where leaks start, you can keep a close eye on them and stop issues before damage sets in.

Add these three locations to your regular maintenance and check them often to prevent a total disaster in your home.

The roof. When your roof develops a leak, it can go undetected a long time, especially if it is in the midst of our winter months. Although it’s mostly mild in Spring Valley and surrounding areas, most of us likely avoid climbing on the roof during this time of year.

Water damage on the roof can progress slowly, but when it does, it can cause problems on every level of your home. When your attic space gets wet, because it is typically a dark and small area already, mold growth can easily occur and cause more problems.

Check your attic for musty odors or wet insulation, and get on your roof at least twice a year. Be cognizant of potential damage after a wind storm as well by keeping an eye on gutters and the perimeter of your home.

The bathroom. In a room where so much water is used, it might not be a surprise there is a high risk of damage, but it can actually be hard to catch problems when they occur.

Add checking under your bathroom sinks to your weekly cleaning list, and listen for drips while you feel for standing water or other moisture. If your bathroom seems to always be damp or your drains run slow there could be a bigger issue going on.

Inspect around your toilet and shower for worn-out caulking, and make sure you have proper ventilation installed.

Appliances with water lines. When an appliance has a water feature, it also has a leak potential. These leaks can be slow and small, and commonly start underneath or behind the appliance. This can lead to water sneaking around the base of your walls and even creating soft spots in your floor.

Pull your dishwasher, refrigerator and washing machine out and away from the wall at least once a year for cleaning and inspection. Make sure the hoses aren’t kinked, and look for mold growth.

When you use your large appliances, listen for drips or water that is moving too fast or too slow. All appliances have different life spans, but it is ideal to replace anything older than 10 years old in order to prevent problems from happening.

If you do find water lurking in your home, call SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul right away. We are available 24/7 when there is a disaster, and we make it our goal to get your home restored quickly.

Make a Resolution to Protect Your Home From Water Damage This Year | SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul

1/12/2023 (Permalink)

A new year brings with it the perfect opportunity to start projects that can make life a little simpler. This year, don’t just start a project, finish one and prevent water damage in your home by taking actions that can help you avoid costly damages.

Water is a common natural and manmade disaster that leaves homes damaged, and a minuscule hole can cause utter chaos. Incorporate steps into your regular routines that are easy to keep and can make a big difference.

What Causes Water Damage?

To prevent a disaster, you need to first know where and how it starts. Water leaks can originate inside or on the outside of your home.

Outside, dirty gutters and heavy downpours that lead to runoff are typical sources of water damage, while inside, bathroom fixtures and large appliances often can be the start of issues.

Pipes that have worn down due to age or caulking that has eroded away around windows can also cause a buildup of excess moisture. When a leak is unidentified and allowed to persist it can leave your home with mold growth or even issues in your walls and floors.

Appliances can begin to rust or stop working altogether when there is too much moisture or puddling water present. The sooner you are able to identify and address the source, the more the risk of damages can be lowered.

How to Prevent Damage

While only a little bit of water can do a great deal of destruction, there are plenty of ways to prevent and even stop damage. Early detection is the best way to avoid a disaster, so staying active in prevention means catching a problem will be a breeze.

In order to find a water issue, regularly check your bathrooms and kitchen for drips, puddles or signs of mold. The next time it rains, use your hands to check the windows to see if they are damp. Sniff the air around your home for smells and note musty odors.

Inspect your roof at least once a month and after the winds pick up for shingles that are loose or have gone missing. Clean your gutters year-round, and make sure water can flow away from your downspout areas by clearing them often.

Check the grading in your yard regularly and make sure there is a slope away from your foundation. Check guidelines for current defensible zone requirements to ensure you are maintaining your yard to code.

While these are primarily protection for wildfires, they can also help you prepare for flooding. Keeping your yard maintained is especially crucial during the winter, when the storms that hit our area can cause mudslides and flash flooding.

By adding easy steps into your housekeeping routines, you can prevent costly and time-consuming repairs. And you will finally have a resolution you actually kept!

Water Seepage in the Home | SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul

12/29/2022 (Permalink)

Water leaks in the home are a common issue that may go unseen for an extended amount of time. There are things you can check for if you suspect a leak, including cracked paint, stains on the walls or a musty odor. Too much moisture in your home can lead to poor air quality and damage to your foundation.

A slow leak or excessive moisture could also create rust on your appliances. These signs are more subtle ones to look for, but you should also watch out for more noticeable signs like pools of water on the floor.

Water can cause serious damage, so the faster you act, the less need for costly repairs you will have later. Learn what to look for and how to prevent water leaks and keep your house dry.

Water Fixture Leaks

Bathrooms and kitchens are prone to leaks. Broken-down caulking around fixtures or holes in water lines can lead to water spots on walls and floors near sinks, showers, tubs and toilets.

Check these areas often during your regular cleaning routine, and stop dripping immediately. A small leak can lead to thousands of gallons of water spilled over the years, so the sooner you act, the less likely your home is to have extensive damages.

Water From Appliances

Appliances are a common source of water leaks. Refrigerators with ice makers or water options in the door and dishwashers are appliances that come with a high risk for leaks that could linger and lead to damages and an extensive repair.

To check for a leak around large appliances, unplug them and move them out from any walls. Check behind them for pools of water, damp spots on the wall or mold growth. Call us if you find an issue to get professional restoration handled quickly before damages get worse.

External Sources

Not all water damage comes from internal sources. Outside sources can also cause a slow leak through windows and doors or result in a sudden flood when severe weather strikes.

While we do enjoy mostly mild weather year-round in this part of California, flooding is a risk we have to be prepared for. Heavy rains that lead to flash flooding or an overflowing bay are some of the more common causes, but wildfires also play a factor in our vulnerability to flooding. After a wildfire strips an area of natural resources, it only takes one heavy storm to create a major flooding concern.

With a plan, you can manage these severe weather risks that may create flooding. Prepare your home before an event can occur and keep it maintained to protect your property and stay safe.

Keep a close eye on gutters, downspouts and your roof as a first layer of protection. Clean debris out of your gutters and clear buildup away from your downspout to stop overflowing water that could leak through your roof, walls and into your foundation.

Your windows and doors are another weak point you should check on a regular basis. Decayed seals allow too much moisture indoors that could cause mold growth.

Update your landscaping not only to meet defensible zone standards but to also ensure there is a pitch to keep water moving away from your home. Use organic materials to protect your foundation and prevent excess moisture. When your home is ready, you can rest knowing you are prepared for anything.

If you experience water damage inside your home or business, call us247. We have the experience and equipment to get your property back in working order fast.

Water and the Damage It Causes | SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul

5/17/2022 (Permalink)

A little water spot or drippy faucet may seem like something you can handle later, but moisture and its destructive effects should never be underestimated. In a year, a small household leak can lose up to 10,000 gallons of water.

Water damage moves quickly, saturating floors, walls and other surfaces. Addressing the problem right away means less damage and better end results.

This is the basic timeline of how water progresses:

In the First 24 Hours

Living in a house in a high-risk area means that you have a one in four chance of enduring a damaging flood within 30 years. When you spot water, knowing how to respond is crucial.

The first two days after a flood is the most crucial time frame. Some items in your home will be lost to water’s effects almost immediately.

Anything upholstered or soft will absorb water and become soaked, while wooden items will begin to swell from moisture. Personal items like books and photographs are susceptible to warping and may become damaged beyond repair.

Mold can also begin to form in these first few hours, making taking action quickly of the utmost importance.

SERVPRO has a “restore vs. replace” mentality. We want to save as many of your precious keepsakes as possible, as well as your other items so you save money. If we cannot fully restore any items, we will communicate directly with you and handle the removal so that your home can continue to dry out.

Within the First Week

Water damage moves quickly after the first 24 hours. When an environment is moist, mold can spread like wildfire and even set in and damage the home’s structure.

Any porous surfaces like wood or walls will become compromised, while corrosion will start on anything metal.

After One Week

You want to dry your home and items out as quickly as possible, as any moisture allowed to sit for extended amounts of time will have catastrophic effects. The more time that passes the more it will cost to do the extensive work required to restore anything.

Risks also increase when items stay wet, too, as structural damage is greater.

How SERVPRO Will Help

Even within the first 24 hours, SERVPRO can respond and begin work immediately. Service starts with thorough water removal to prevent any additional spread and reduce drying time.

It is likely that floors, furniture and other items will need to be cleaned, sanitized and deodorized. Once the majority of water has been removed, our specialized team will use industry-leading equipment to remove water you can’t even see.

Once these steps are finished, there may be a need for construction work in order to restore things back to preloss status. This could involve a minor repair or a complete rebuild of a damaged section of your home.

SERVPRO can simplify your restoration process by handling every step from damage mitigation through construction. We will keep you aware of the progress of each step and get you back in your home faster.

Regardless of the type of water damage sustained, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover. Contact us 247 when you need a dependable team to help you recover.

The Facts About Flooding Types and Causes | SERVPRO® Spring Valley/Jamul

4/7/2022 (Permalink)

Flooding is a common natural disaster that claims more lives per year in the United States than hurricanes, tornadoes or lightning. Floods affect everything from an individual property to an entire community or city.

All 50 states and every U.S. territory have been affected by flooding, and there are many similarities in the type of flooding and the casualties. There are three common types of floods and four main reasons they happen.

3 Types of Natural Flooding

Flash floods are a common type of flood that occurs when a storm with excessive moisture sits over an area and the ground becomes too overwhelmed to absorb all the water. These floods happen quickly and can carry objects away, large or small.

River floods happen when a river takes on too much water and begins to spill over its banks. River floods leave behind damage as they overtake the area near them.

Coastal floods occur near large bodies of water when a weather event causes the ocean or gulf to rise. Storm surge, rising tides or cyclonic activity can all contribute to this kind of flooding.

The 4 Most Common Causes of Natural Flooding

Heavy rainfall. Heavy rain has been one of the top sources of flooding in our neighborhoods here in Spring Valley and Jamul. We likely all remember the heavy rain that caused roads to wash out in 2019. These storms that move in with excessive amounts of moisture easily overwhelm our rivers and create flash flooding in our urban areas that lack soil to absorb excess water.

Oceanic activity. While we are primarily inland, we are more than familiar with the weather activities that our coastal neighbors deal with. Hurricanes, rising tides and storm surge can create catastrophic flooding when the ocean rises beyond its typical level.

Dams and levees failing. In recent history, the most notable levee break occurred in 2005 during Hurricane Katrina. Levees and dams break when they are cracked or under extreme pressure, causing the storm surge behind it to release. These floods cause catastrophic damage.

Snowmelts and ice dams. While snow may be an exciting prospect in our corner of California, those areas in our nation that see prolonged freezing temperatures and high amounts of accumulating snow have to prepare for flooding from snow melt and ice dams. Ice dams, or ice jams result from ice being forced downstream in a body of water and creating a block. This leads to water spilling over and flooding surrounding areas.

Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover from its disastrous effects. Contact us anytime when flooding or water damage makes a mess in your

High Water Bill in Jamul?

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

A water meter is shown. We locate and repair hidden water damage in San Diego County.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that minor water leaks account for more than one trillion gallons of water wasted in United States homes each year. Many water leaks are not visible, and even minor water leaks can cause significant damage to a home over time. SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul uses advanced technology, like infrared cameras, to locate hidden water leaks in homes and businesses.

Here is some information from the EPA to help you determine if you have a hidden water leak:

  • A good method to check for leaks is to examine your winter water use. A family of four likely has a serious leak problem if its winter water use exceeds 12,000 gallons per month.
  • Check your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, you probably have a leak.
  • To check for a toilet bowl leak, place a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. You have a leak if the color shows up in the bowl within ten minutes without flushing.

  • Caulk and seal windows to guard against water seepage
  • Inspect your roof for missing, damaged and aging shingles and make necessary repairs

Washing Machine Supply Line Maintenance Tips for Bonita?

Washing Machine Maintenance for Bonita.

Did you know that supply line failure is one of the top causes of water damage involving a washing machine? SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul witnesses firsthand the damage a burst supply line can do in a home. Here are some washing machine supply line maintenance tips:

Conduct monthly inspections of the hot and cold washing machine supply lines.

  • Look for signs the supply hose may be ready to fail—blisters in the hose, worn tubing, stress cracks, or a loose connection
  • Replace the supply hose with a reinforced steel braided hose if it shows any sign of wear
  • Tighten the connection if it feels loose. The most common site of failure is near the connection where the hose bends.
  • Replace supply hoses every five years, even if there is no obvious deterioration or wear
  • Some signs of deterioration may occur from the inside out and may not be visible until it is too late
  • When replacing washing machine supply hoses, always choose a reinforced steel braided hose over the traditional un-reinforced rubber hose. These hoses will last longer and are far less likely to result in a catastrophic water loss.

Tips for Preventing Water Damage in Jamul?

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

A kitchen water faucet is shown running. We respond to water damage emergencies in Spring Valley 24-hours a day.

Maintenance and Inspection Tips for Preventing Water Damage

At SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul, we know that many water damage emergencies can be avoided by routine maintenance and inspection of your home’s indoor plumbing systems. Here are some tips for preventing water damage from the Insurance Information Institute:

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets. Make it a practice every year to check hoses leading to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerator ice makers. You may also want to invest in a water leak monitoring and shut-off system that can alert you to any leakage issues. Immediately replace any hoses that have cracks or leaks and replace them all every five to seven years.
  • Inspect showers and tubs. Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes. Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any necessary repairs made immediately.

It’s also a good idea to understand what is covered in your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy. For instance, some policies will cover sewer and drain backups, and some do not, and you may have to purchase a sewer backup rider to add to your existing coverage.

Staying Healthy around Standing Water in Spring Valley

2/4/2021 (Permalink)

Staying Healthy Around Standing Water in Spring Valley:

Standing water of any kind in Spring Valley can be a powerful source of disease. Floods can be worse due to the amount of water involved. Even small puddles can pose a risk.

Different kinds of debris can be found in floodwater such as dead animals, rotted plants, and sewage, to name a few. If you have water damage inside your home, watch for debris in the home as well to include rotted food and electrical problems.

Viruses and bacteria can cause illnesses. To reduce your chances of catching something, SERVPRO of Spring Valley / Jamul suggests:

  • Washing dirty clothes and towels in hot water. Use bleach if possible
  • Remember that you can shake hands with an infected person and get infected.
  • Do not allow children to play in the flood water
  • Wash children’s hands before meals
  • Disinfect toys before letting children play with them
  • Use bleach or other disinfectants on hard surfaces
  • Keep your hands washed

Cuts and rashes can become infected. Protect yourself and others in Spring Valley:

  • Avoid floodwaters if you have an open rash or a cut
  • Clean cuts or rashes. Cover them with a waterproof bandage
  • Clean cuts with soap and clean water
  • If a cut becomes red, swollen, or is oozing, get medical attention

Leaking Roof in Jamul?

Shingles are torn off a roof in Jamul after a recent rainstorm. We are water damage restoration specialists in Spring Valley, Bonita and Jamul.

Climbing the roof over water damage?

After a recent rainstorm hit San Diego county, my roof was left with damaged roof shingles and a roof leak. Water was seeping into the attic and damaging the insulation and attic floor. On top of that, there was a dank, musty odor. Yuck. Then I remembered to call SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul. They asked me some questions over the phone and sent a team out to assess the damage and begin the restoration process. They tarped the roof to minimize further damage and set up air movers and blowers to dry the area completely. They also documented the entire drying process.

One Convenient Point of Contact

SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul are also state licensed General Contractors, so once the area was completely dried, they came back and repaired the roof, installed new insulation, cleaned and neutralized the bad odor, and helped me with the insurance paperwork and process. The water dispenser of a stainless-steel refrigerator is shown. Spring Valley, Jamul, and Bonita residents rely on us to restore water damage emergencies.

Water dispenser disaster

It wasn’t until I pulled my refrigerator away from the wall to clean behind it that I discovered the leak. The water line going to my water dispenser wasn’t tightened down all the way, and water had been dripping underneath my refrigerator for about some time before I found the leak. It was easy to repair the waterline, but the repairs to the hardwood floors in my kitchen were very expensive. The Cherry Wood flooring was discontinued, and the flooring store no longer carried it. I ended up having to replace the floors in my entire kitchen and dining room!

Burst Pipe in Bonita?

A workbench is shown with many construction tools laying on it. we respond to water damage emergencies 24 hours a day in the Spring Valley area.

Soggy Wall

It wasn’t until I saw the stain forming on my wall in my Bonita house that I knew I had a plumbing problem. The water stain bloomed and caused the drywall to become soggy. The plumber came out and tore apart the wall and repaired the leaking pipe, but I was left with a soggy mess to clean up. I called  SERVPRO® of Spring Valley/Jamul right away. They came out and assessed the damage. They used moisture detection devices to see how much moisture was present and set up air movers and blowers to remove the excess moisture. They explained that even though the water that caused the leak had been corrected, there was still moisture left in the drywall, floor, and structural framing that could cause the material to break down and could even cause mold to grow.

Once the area was completely dried, they replaced the soggy insulation, put up new drywall, and painted it to match the undamaged wall. The repairs were finished quickly, and when they were through, my wall looked like it did before the leak ever happened!

Why use a professional water damage company

9/28/2020 (Permalink)

After significant water damage in a home, the goal is to renovate the property and restore its original value as well as mitigating such problem in the future. An emergency response team can help you when it comes to home restoration in the quest to handle the problem as soon as possible. The extent of the water damage will have a huge impact on the overall cost of repair. If you are lucky, the insurance company can help you to meet a substantial part of the home restoration bill.

While flooding can lead to significant water damage, a leaky roof or basement can also escalate the problem. It is vital to fix the leaks as part of your flood mitigation regimen and reduce the impact of floods in your home. While the signs of water damage are obvious, the floods have some secondary effects that include rotting of wood or development of mildew. It is vital to dry the water in home surfaces and eliminate the puddles that can cause such problems in the future. The restoration company will rely on various methods when drying the water in business floors, such as the natural or artificial methods. Flood mitigation is vital since you can reduce the cost of home repair if you abate the impact of floods in your property. The process of home repair after flooding involves water cleanup, deodorizing, drying, and dehumidifying. In the event of a pipe break in the kitchen, you are likely to end up with a flooded home. A flooded home can also be a result of a bathroom pipe break, meaning that the regular inspection of the system is vital.

The home restoration process entails fixing the source of the floods, water cleanup, drying, and taking the key steps during flood mitigation to prevent such an occurrence in the future. The poor flow of water in home drains due to blockages can lead to some potential flooding problems. Before you embark on the water cleanup, be sure to address the flaws in the drainage system. Installing some backflow preventers in the sewer and drainage systems is vital if you are looking to protect your home from contaminants. During the water cleanup, the consultants will use some disinfectants and detergents to clean your home and eliminate the contaminants. Besides addressing the supply line break, be sure to repair the leaks.

Remove all the water in home walls, carpets, and floor by pumping it out, mopping, and drying with the natural methods. As you eliminate the water in home walls and basements, avoid using a heater that might weaken the concrete walls. The best way to handle the flood damage after the leakage of water in business carpets is to get them out of the house for airing. The flow of water in business floors can lead to extensive flood damage that calls for expert intervention. When it comes to the elimination of water in business basements, you should avoid using a pump that causes the reduction of pressure and weakening of the walls. Avoid the unexpected pipe break by evaluating the plumbing system occasionally.

Mitigation is vital when it comes to the renovation of a flooded home. However, the success of the mitigation initiatives depends on the restoration company that you choose. A reputable restoration company is equipped with the requisite materials and expertise to handle the damages and renovate your flooded home back to its original state. If the supply line break is the main cause of the flood damage, stopping the flow of water in a flooded home is vital. Flaws in the plumbing system can cause flood damage after the supply line break. Sealing the pipes is a good way to prevent the supply line breaks in the future. The restoration company will propose several solutions when dealing with the pipe break in your bathroom.

Preventing Frozen Pipes in San Diego

2/8/2020 (Permalink)

Water spigot with icicles on it Frozen Spigot

We’re in the middle of winter and seeing a lot of cold nights.  While San Diego has one of the best climates in the US, it is not uncommon for the weather to drop below freezing during these few winter months.  With these low temperatures come the real threat of pipes freezing or bursting from the low temperatures.  Avoiding frozen pipes can save you thousands of dollars.  Here are a few tips to help keep the water flowing and pipes from freezing:

Ensure your Pipes are well insulated

This will need to be done long before a predicted freeze, but is the most important and effective way to prevent pipes from freezing.  Most plumbing pipes run though the attic where the temperature usually closely mimics the exterior temperature.  Ensuring that all water pipes and fire sprinkler pipes are well wrapped is the best way to protect them from the elements.

Drain your sprinkler system

Turn of the supply to your sprinkler system and open the valves on the coldest nights.  This will allow the pipes to expand as needed during a freeze without breaking.

Leave a faucet slightly opened

In the case of freezing weather a dripping faucet is a good thing.  On the coldest of nights open a faucets slightly to allow water to drip.  This will not only make it less likely that the pipe will freeze as the water will be moving, but if it does freeze it will reduce the pressure and make a rupture much less likely.

Know where your shutoff is

In the event you do get a leak or have a plumbing issue, knowing where the water shutoff is and ensuring that it works will allow you to stop the water flow.  Test your shutoff at least once a year and make sure it moves freely and actually stops the water flow to your home.

If you do end up with water damage in your home Contact SERVPRO of Spring Valley/Jamul at (619) 600-5305 24/7 and we will make it "Like it never even happened.”

Upcoming Heavy rains

1/20/2020 (Permalink)

Standing water outside of a home Flood water outside a home

With rain in the future it is important to make sure that your San Diego property is protected from potential flooding.  Home owners should take a few steps to ensure that their home is protected from flood waters.

Start by clearing debris from your landscape drainage and rain gutters to ensure that rain water does not accumulate against your home.

Prior to heavy rains place sand bags in any low lying areas to prevent standing water against your property.  You can often receive free sand bags from the local authorities.  Check https://www.readysandiego.org/content/dam/oesready/en/flooding/Unincorporated-Flooding-Flyer.pdf for locations offering sand and sand bags.

If your preparation efforts aren’t successful and water does enter your home, call SERVPRO of Spring Valley / Jamul and our certified staff will make it “Like it never even happened.”

5 Signs You Need To Replace Your Toilet

8/10/2018 (Permalink)

Sewage backup in a Spring Valley, CA home

A leaking toilet can cause a lot of water damage in your Spring Valley, CA, home. If you let the fixture remain in your bathroom, you may have recurring water problems. It can be hard to know when a repair can fix the problem or when you need to replace the toilet. Use these tips to help you figure out what's right for your situation.

1. Standing water at the base. Standing water around your toilet is a sure sign you have a leak. You may notice this puddle of water if the seal of your toilet is old and worn out. Not only could this stream of fluids cause damage, but it can cost you money in wasted water too.
2. Widespread corrosion. An old toilet may have rust on some metal parts. If you notice this corrosion on multiple pieces of your fixture, it's often better to replace it rather than try to repair it.
3. Cracks in the porcelain. Cracks in the tank or bowl can also lead to a leaking toilet. These cracks may form over time or when a heavy object falls on the toilet. Look for signs of damage every time you clean the bathroom.
4. Constant running. A constantly running toilet usually points to a worn-out flapper or a misaligned float. Sometimes this issue can be addressed with a toilet repair, however, in some cases a replacement may be best.
5. Hissing in the tank. Do you hear a strange hissing sound coming from your tank? This could be a sign that water is being forced through a smaller-than-normal hole. Whether you have sediment buildup or a worn-out valve, it could be a sign that you need to think about a replacement soon.

If you have a leaking toilet, you should call in a plumber and water remediation team to address the situation. Working with these professionals can help you figure out if a repair or replacement is best for you.

Dealing With a Water Loss in Spring Valley California

5/18/2018 (Permalink)

Spring Valley California and Jamul CA are in San Diego County, and it is very beautiful there. There are mostly sunny days, and the last thing that anyone would think of would be a flood. However, at times the rain is so intense that flooding is a possibility. Even so, it is possible for someone in their home to have a leaky pipe or a pipe that breaks. This can cause water damage just as severe as a flood.

When a home suffers flood damage or water damage, it can be just as bad as a fire or a storm that has high enough winds to do damage to property. Whenever water arrives unexpectedly in enough quantity to soak your belongings, they are as good as gone. When this type of water in home or water in business damage occurs most of your belongings become soaked and very susceptible to bacteria and mold which is impossible to get rid of.

Items such as sofas, pillows, pictures, carpeting, padding, draperies, tapestries, drywall, electrical systems, and other items that soak up water will all be ruined. The first thought might be to attempt to salvage some of these things, but it is hopeless to try to do so. The mold and bacteria will soon set in, and it is impossible to dry out these items.

Mold
Mold is an organism that grows from a tiny spore that floats through the air. All it needs is a moist spot, a dark place, and no moving air. Once a spore lands and finds these conditions, it will grow. It grows rapidly too. One small patch can grow over an entire wall in a week or so.

An individual should not try to wipe off the mold because it has roots. People should not expose themselves to the mold because it begins giving off spores as it grows and if inhaled can lead to health and respiratory problems. Mold will grow on just about any surface except glass. Mold has to be treated by experts and killed so that it doesn't grow back.

Bacteria
Bacteria usually comes in with the flood water and simply grows from there. If the flood is from the outside just about anything can be in the water from raw sewage, chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers, petroleum products, soil and some other harmful items. Once this type of water touches anything, the items will be contaminated and will need to be thrown out.

The Process
A mitigation of water in home and water in business types of flood damage must be removed by specific processes such as water removal and drying processes. Usually, the water can be removed with high-speed pumps if there is standing water and the flood has stopped, or the pipe that broke is repaired.

Once the water cleanup process is completed, a drying process can take place by using industrial style fans that create air movement over the area that was flooded. This process can take up to two to three days before things begin to get dry.

The air movement that is created by the fans does a lot to take care of the surface moisture, but with items that soak up the water, there is no hope of ever salvaging those items. They will have to be thrown out and discarded because the mold and bacteria will find them to be wonderful homes for their growth.

Mitigation of the area continues with any minor water cleanup of the area and the sanitation of the area. A complete sterilization of the area must take place to kill all of the bacteria and mold so that it won't grow back later. This is a very thorough process, and no area must be missed because if it is missed, the mold and bacteria will have a foothold from which to flourish.

When everything is removed that soaks up water and the area has been cleaned and sanitized, reconstruction can commence. Drywall and even some studs may need to be replaced along with wiring and wall sockets. Flooring and carpeting may need replacement as well as molding and finishing of wood.

Painting and finishing may need to take place, and then new furniture and fixtures can be put into place. In many instances, if the damage is invasive enough an entire rebuilding process may need to take place. This may seem to be a lot of work and expense, and it is. However, you don't want a drop of water or any contaminants to be left for that can start a cycle of deterioration over time that can stay hidden for a long time, only to appear years later.

Precautions

Even though floods are rare in California, they do happen. Particularly in the San Deigo County areas of Spring Valley and Jamul, CA where the sun shines most of the time and flooding is the farthest thing from the residents' minds.

One thing that homeowners and business owners can do is to locate the place in the building where the shut-off valve is for the entire building. If there is a broken pipe, that is the first place to go, as long as you don't have to walk through standing water. If standing water is in a basement, for example, you don't always know if it is covering up an electrical socket. If you should touch or walk in the water, it could electrocute you. But if is located outside or in an accessible place it should be turned off.

Keeping an eye on the weather situation is a good idea if an extraordinary amount of rain is expected. Make plans to leave home if a flood is imminent from a possible heavy rainfall. Have a place to go that is away from a flood area, and itemize what you will need to take with you, such as important papers, keys, and some extra clothing.

Flooding may never happen, but if it does, you will need to act fast and have a good presence of mind as to who to call and where to go. Visit http://www.SERVPROspringvalleyjamul.comfor more information on water loss and restoration services.

However, it can be one of your home's most vital systems, and when something goes wrong, such as a leaking toilet, the results can be messy and expensive. If a toilet cannot be repaired, the next best option might be to replace it yourself.

This type of leak can be quite common and cause water to spill out onto the floor when the toilet is flushed or filling. To check for this type of leak, dry the floor around the toilet and the base, then flush the unit. If you see water leak from the seal, then you may want to consider upgrading your toilet and making a new seal.

2. Remove the Toilet

Once you have determined you need a new toilet, the next step in this process is to remove the old one. First, turn off the water to the unit and then empty the tank and bowl as much as possible to prevent the water from sloshing out when you move the toilet. Disconnect the water and then unscrew the bolts from the base of the toilet before gently lifting the leaking toilet and undoing the seal. You may want to have a water removal and restoration company come in at this point to ensure no lasting water damage has been done by the leak.

3. Install a New Unit

Once you check the toilet's flange for signs of wear, you can complete your toilet repair project by installing the new unit. Remember to create a good seal by pressing down firmly on the toilet's bare rim. Once the new toilet is in place, you can turn the water back on and check if the problem is resolved.
